Since the program's inception in 1998, Na'amat Canada members in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Toronto have worked tirelessly each year to ensure that thousands of children in domestic violence shelters have the supplies they need to succeed in school.
Forced to leave everything behind to start a new life, these children and their mothers, often battered and traumatized, typically arrive at these shelters with little more than the clothes on their backs.
Adding to their obvious distress is the anxiety of enrolling in a new school without so much as a simple pencil case or backpack.
The Na'amat School Supplies for Kids program, thanks to the generous support of donors, corporate sponsors and volunteers, fully equips these children with the tools to resume their education with renewed dignity and hope.
Note: Funds to support our School Supplies for Kids programs come from a variety of sources including casinos, OLG Cgaming (Delta Bingo) and grants.
To reflect the work that is done at the Na'amat Canada Glickman Centre, women's rights centres and other Na'amat installations in Israel, certain branches of Na'amat Canada have instituted these social service projects, aiming to fulfill essential needs for local women and their families.
It is a triumph for an abused woman to have the strength and courage to escape from their dangerous living environment in search of refuge. Unfortunately, many victims of abuse are only able to flee in the dead of night with just the clothes on their backs. Throughout the year, Na'amat Canada Toronto's Club Aviva collects donated toiletries and cosmetics from Na'amat Canada members and friends. Volunteers package these products up and distribute them to women's shelters every few months. These toiletries include soap, shampoo, conditioner, disposable razors, cotton swabs, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other basic necessities that the victims of violence might not have the opportunity to take with them when they leave their homes.
A new initiative was established to fill an unaddressed need for clients at Jewish Family Services Calgary (JFSC) called Na’amat Canada Calgary Providing the Essentials. “Our program will provide hygiene items and cleaning supplies that most of us take for granted: but when someone is struggling to make ends meet or living under the poverty level, these items are unaffordable” says, Stephanie Sacks, Na’amat Canada Calgary President.
“Our Na’amat Canada Calgary Providing the Essentials program will be an ongoing project, and our members are so pleased that we are able to assist JFSC, and help so many Calgarians” says, Aviva Lifschitz, Na’amat Canada Calgary Membership Chair.
Na'amat Canada has members of every generation and we take pride in looking after the needs of all our chaverot. Many of our cities have recruited volunteers to help facilitate a variety of activities and social programs for seniors.
Our popular noontime programs for our senior-most members feature home-style lunches, entertainment and speakers on a range of topics. A renewed sense of camaraderie and working together for a common cause is a unique hallmark of these gatherings.
While the women of Na'amat Canada represent every generation, we take special pride in meeting the needs of our oldest chaverot, along with those in the wider Jewish community living in seniors' residences and nursing homes.
Any and every opportunity to bring comfort and support to those unable to get out to attend our many programs and events is one worth taking in our view.
Na’amat Canada Edmonton is proud to provide bursaries to single mothers and other women in our province to help them complete their certificate or diploma programs. The bursaries are annual and are aimed at helping women further their education, much like Na’amat’s scholarship program in Israel.
Na’amat Canada Calgary has set up an annual bursary at Bow Valley College, known for its career-focused, practical learning. The bursary is open to female students in their final year of study in the Early Learning and Child Care Diploma program. By empowering these women, we believe children in Calgary will be well taken care of in the future.
This program is designed to mirror Na’amat’s work in Israel as the largest provider of childcare services.

Note: Funds to support these bursaries come from the proceeds of casinos as set out by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission guidelines.
Na’amat Canada branches across the country have strong connections in our cities. Here are a few examples of projects and initiatives that serve our local communities.
Na'amat Canada Montreal publishes a January-December calendar annually that features information about Na'amat, advertisements from our supporters, and Jewish calendar information. Many donors add their special commemorative dates to the calendar (birthdays, anniversaries, yahrzeits). The calendar is distributed at various community venues and is free of charge.
