2024 Year In Review

2024 was a year of hope and prayers for the safe return of our hostages and soldiers. We stood in solidarity with our sisters in Na’amat Israel, working to ensure the safety and well-being of women and children. Their resilience and strength continue to inspire us. We remain committed to this vital work in the future.

Centennial Celebration

Our Centennial Celebration to be held from May 16 to May 18 in Toronto where we will be joined by our chaverot from Na’amat USA.

Galim

Na’amat Galim is the Vancouver Chapter, with its membership comprised of a group of dynamic and interesting women in their 50’s and 60’s. Our programming is a blend of music, speakers, crafts and outreach programs as well as a much looked forward to annual retreat in Whistler. The women of Galim are known in the Vancouver community for our Purim Hamantashen Bake Sale and Rosh Hashanah cakes. This year we are excited about our outreach program which includes baking and providing food for the Jewish Food Bank and supporting families around Hannukah with a holiday gift basket.

President's Message

Na’amat Galim, Vancouver’s chapter, was established in 1991. As the chapter’s current co-chairs, we are both excited and proud to lead another great year.

Our chapter consists of a group of dedicated women, who, despite coming from a variety of backgrounds, all share a common passion for supporting the important work that Na’amat does for families in Israel, particularly for women and children.

Some of our members have been in the chapter for over 20 years while others are new. This diversity helps maintain our understanding of where our organization has come from while allowing us to take on new ideas and to evolve. We are always open to growing our group and welcoming new members.

Our chapter meets monthly. During non-Covid times, each member takes a turn to host while others contribute by providing tasty treats. During Covid, we have been meeting on Zoom. We make sure to keep these meetings interesting by having a variety of speakers and activities. Some of our favourite meetings have included hosting stimulating guest speakers, a musical evening with a professional songwriter, as well as a crafts event with a talented artist.

We also hold an annual retreat where we bond, relax, eat amazing pot-luck meals and brainstorm the upcoming year’s programming and fundraising events.

Although we are always looking for new and creative ways to raise money for Na’amat, we are recognized for our successful annual Purim Hamentashen Bake Sale and for our Rosh Hashanah Cakes.

Last year, we were excited to implement our outreach program which included providing a Chanukah Gift Basket for a needy family. We also made and distributed granola bars for the Jewish Food Bank. We are pleased to co-sponsor a movie at the Jewish Film Festival and a book session at the Jewish Book Festival.

We want to thank all our wonderful members for their dedication to Na’amat and for making Galim the great, committed chapter that it is.

Head Band Project

In 2018, Ruth and her friend Marion (86) spearheaded Project Headband.
The goal was to crochet or knit warm headbands for those less fortunate. Our Na’amatniks were invited to a session to learn how to crochet with Marion and Ruth.
Over 150 headbands were made, some by our members and others were made by family members and friends. Amazingly, Marion made over 80 headbands.
In January 2019, the headbands were given to clients at the Jewish Food Bank. The colourful headbands were well received and the clients were very thankful.
The rest of the headbands were distributed to the women of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside.

Caring Cards for Seniors

During Covid 2020/2021 Na'amat Galim had a Caring Card Project. These personalized cards were distributed to 218 residents of the Louis Brier Home and Hospital in Vancouver. A beautiful quilt was made by members of Galim at one of our retreats. This quilt was then reprinted on a card and we had a lovely insert printed on the inside of the card. Included was a personalized note (see below) to each resident.

Since we can't wrap our arms around you and tell you how much we care, let us give you this card of a quilt made by the women of Na'amat to wrap you with our warm thoughts and hopes of better days ahead.
